The weather recently has been remarkably muggy, so I’ve been keeping my office window open while I’m working. Which is all very well, but we’re trying to keep the cats in, so I have to keep the office door closed. Of course, it shouldn’t be too much of a worry, we’re on the first floor (2nd floor if you’re American) and surely the cats wouldn’t be so stupid as to go leaping out of the window. Still, best to keep the door shut.

You can tell where this is going can’t you?

Last night, I went to bed leaving my office door ajar. I had a terrible night’s sleep; I ended up crashing on the armchair in the living room, and I kept being woken by a faint miaowing. So, I checked all the usual places the cats can get stuck, no joy. I must have imagined it. But… there’s only one cat about the place, where’s Sulley got to?

Eventually, I realised the office door was open, and when I was in the office the miaowing was rather louder than it was in the sitting room. At about 5 in the morning I opened the window wide open and stuck my head out, and sure enough, there was Sulley, looking distressed on the pavement and yowling like a good ’un. So, I nip downstairs and let him in (having first made sure to shut my office door properly, obviously).

He’s not the happiest of cats right now; he looks like he’s either bruised or broken one of his toes, and he’s not entirely happy about having spent at least 3 hours wandering around outside wondering which door he should be scratching at.

Now, I really should be swotting up on my GCSE Maths in the vain hope that I’ll remember it all; I’ve got a pile of Lett’s study guides and I’m quickly working through them looking for stuff that’s unfamiliar. It’s surprising how much comes flooding back (and, how easy it is to spot the bits where secondary school teachers replace proof with handwaving). I’m a little bewildered by a study guide that claims that -5 is smaller than +3 though. I think I’ll be sticking to ‘less than’ when I teach kids that particular subject – I don’t mind handwaving, but I do mind inaccuracy.
